Job Description : | JOB TITLE: General Manager DEPARTMENT: General Management/Operations REPORTS TO: Executive Director Job Purpose: As a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, the General Manager is responsible for managing, with minimal supervision, administrative and operations functions across SF Ballet Association including the Artistic, Music, Production, Touring, Medical, Facilities, and Operations areas. A forward-looking and strategic thinker, the GM handles matters in an extremely confidential and professional manner and has a depth of experience with collective bargaining agreements. Job Duties and Responsibilities: Chief strategist in collective bargaining with seven theatrical unions and lead negotiator in conjunction with the Production Director for IATSE, Locals 16, 784, 706, and 800 and the Company Manager for AGMA, AFM, and IATSE, Local B18. Builds, manages, and maintains cooperative and productive relationships between management and labor Manages Production Director, Associate General Manager, union personnel, and oversees Music Administration in conjunction with Music Director, and, in conjunction with the Artistic Director and Artistic Administrator, Artistic Administration. Serves on internal team for crisis management. In close concert with the CFO, AD, and ED, serves as Budget lead for the artistic, music, production, touring, new ballets, full-length ballets, dance medicine, and budgets for WMOH activities. Has final authority, in conjunction with Production Director and Associate General Manager, and approves on a timely basis the individual contracts for presenters, dancers, choreographers, designers, music soloists, and other artists and vendors. Negotiates and seeks out special projects that support the organization’s activities and further its mission (e.g., recordings, television production, festivals, presentations, commissioning projects, co-production agreements). Works in partnership with the Development Staff to provide pertinent information to achieve maximum funding opportunities for the Association. Strategizes existing and prospective opportunities for the purpose of expanding touring, keeping financial viability, strategic locales, and brand enhancement in mind. Promotes and maintains relationships with presenters. Develops in collaboration with key internal stakeholders and with careful awareness of outside events and scheduling conflicts and carefully maintains annual calendar of all program activities Liaison with outside entities on behalf of San Francisco Ballet – for example War Memorial Performing Arts Center, San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Symphony, Employer Trustee of IATSE Local 16 Health & Welfare and Pension Trust Funds, Employer Trustee of AGMA Health & Welfare and Pension Trust Funds, etc. **Important Note: Employer Trustees are selected by the respective Funds. SF Ballet does not automatically have representation on the funds as an Employer Trustee. Performs other duties as required or assigned by Executive Director and Artistic Director. JOB DIMENSIONS AND QUALIFICATIONS Positions Supervised: Production Director (1), Associate General Manager (1), and Orchestra Personnel Manager (1) (in conjunction with the Music Director) Internal Contacts: All staff, trustees, volunteers, dancers, musicians, guest artists, production, and stage personnel. External Contacts: Union officials, theater personnel, tour presenters, city officials, producers, other arts administrators, legal counsel, vendors, consultants. Education Level and Focus: Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Arts, Business, or related fields or the equivalent in verifiable work experience Years and Type of Related Experience Required: Minimum 8+ years closely related experience in producing performing arts organization of comparable size and documented experience in CBAs Professional/Technical Competencies: Negotiates favorable collective bargaining agreements and other contractual relationships with persuasion and diplomacy. Monitors the budgets for artistic, music, production, touring, new ballets, full-length works, dance medicine; brings forth on a timely basis any ideas, issues, or concerns regarding fiscal matters to the Executive Director. Utilizes special knowledge of artistic matters to manage the long-range planning process and to work with the Artistic Director and Executive Director on strategic planning and related initiatives. Communicates expectations, offers support, and effectively delivers regular and objective feedback to staff. Models behavior that promotes and energizes a fast-paced, cohesive, and high-functioning working team in a rapidly changing environment. Effectively delegates work to staff, assuring assignments reflect the priorities of the Association. Fully participates in Board meetings, Leadership Team, and Full Staff Meetings, supporting colleagues by offering information and assisting with appropriate projects and initiatives. Provides leadership to the Association on the Leadership team. Serves as an ardent and loyal advocate for San Francisco Ballet throughout the organization, the community, and the performing arts world. Organizes and clearly communicates the annual calendars of all program activities. Regularly solves problems and completes complex projects at the highest level of excellence and on a timely basis. Manages discretion in the treatment of sensitive and/or confidential information. Effectively demonstrates a consistent and sustained commitment to prudent fiscal practices through the active pursuit of the elimination of waste from every process with the goal of providing world-class quality, delivery, and service at the lowest possible cost. Ensures that direct reports have the tools, training, and time needed to demonstrate consistent commitment to and participation in strategic initiatives and best practices. Supports and provides equal and fair treatment and opportunity for all. Physical Demands: Position requires periods at PC and minimal lifting (2-5 lbs.). Long hours attending evening performances and events. Ability to travel locally, domestically, and internationally.
