Job Description : Position Overview The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is an internationally preeminent science facility, operated by Stanford University at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory on behalf of the Department of Energy, Office of Science. This facility provides world-leading scientific capabilities to a global user community, covering a very broad research portfolio that includes the development of advanced materials and chemical catalysts for clean energy systems; drug discovery for modern pharmaceuticals; and fundamental studies of astrophysical phenomena. We are seeking a candidate to fill the position of Integrated Laser Systems System Manager. The successful candidate will help drive a dynamic and exciting environment, leading the engineering development and operation of a broad array of scientific instruments that operate at the frontier of science. Major upgrades to LCLS are currently underway, representing well over a billion dollars of investment. Over the next five years, LCLS will design and deliver a new suite of science instruments to transform this field, taking advantage of the orders-of-magnitude increase in X-ray beam power as the pulse repetition rate is increased from 120 pulses/second to 1 million/second. This drives the need for entirely new capabilities in X-ray optics, beam diagnostics, cryogenics, ultra-high vacuum assemblies, and precision opto-mechanical systems. In addition, a major multi-year project is underway to upgrade the LCLS facility with a Petawatt laser, enabling high peak power optical and x-ray photons to combine on target, providing world-leading capabilities in the field of fusion science. The successful candidate will join the LCLS laser engineering team and lead the development of new X-ray and Laser science instruments, X-ray and optical beamline systems, and help lead the development of new operational capabilities for the LCLS facility and manage WBS for large ($90M) project involving Integrated Laser Systems. Responsible for the successful delivery, installation, and commissioning of the integrated laser systems, laser beam transport, and laser facility interfaces and support systems. Note: SLAC is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory operated by Stanford University and based in Menlo Park; CA. Due to COVID-19-related curtailment of on-site activities, the job duties for this position may be required to be performed from home until full site access is restored. Your specific responsibilities include: Provide strategic leadership and management for major scientific, engineering, or technical research organization(s) or program(s) exercising delegated authority for policy and programmatic decisions. Achieve goals through technical and managerial staff engaged in developing, advancing and applying science, engineering and technology; typically have multiple levels of professional and managerial staff. Lead the cross-functional programs and manage, as CAM, WBS for large ($90M) project involving Integrated Laser Systems. Responsible for the successful delivery, installation, and commissioning of the integrated laser systems, laser beam transport, and laser facility interfaces and support systems. Direct and lead efforts across SLAC and several national labs to ensure laser systems are delivered on schedule, within budget, and meet the mission need. This involves: Facilitate effective communication between SLAC and other partner national labs. Develop and manage the technical interfaces between LLE, LLNL, and SLAC to ensure proper integration and commissioning of the laser systems and laser beam transport into the facility. Ensure appropriate staffing, tools, and processes are in place to support the SLAC ILS technical team. Influence strategic technical and staffing decisions and participate as a member of the project technical change control board. Perform engineering duties requiring significant scheduling and budgeting responsibility. Provide strategic direction for a major function or center; create strategic plans of considerable complexity and scope; set long-range direction and make high-level decisions; propose and manage the implementation of significant programmatic changes; establish policies as needed. Direct and oversee the overall scientific, engineering or technical research function for a major function or center. Collaborate with senior management, faculty and/or others in order to develop, communicate and manage a central strategic plan aligned with goals of the larger organization and consistent with the university’s overall mission. Identify, clarify, and resolve highly complex issues with university/school-wide impact and substantial significance, which span multiple areas, requiring broad discretion and judgment. Responsible for ensuring that state-of-the-art scientific, engineering or technical research is adequately funded, staffed, equipped, and housed. Accountable for ensuring finance, budget, personnel, and facilities resources are used appropriately. Manage the adoption and adaptation of emerging technologies to meet changing requirements, capabilities, and opportunities. Lead high-level scientific, engineering, or technical research programs and initiatives through technical design, development, integration and outreach. Advise university/school-wide senior management on technical futures. Collaborate with university leaders on scientific, engineering or technical research project decisions. Other duties may also be assigned To be successful in this position you will bring: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or science applicable to the field of laser science and laser systems engineering and ten years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required in some areas. Experience with laser systems engineering. A track record of leading proposals or programs that pursue new areas of research or technology that meet long-term strategic goals. Experience leading planning and developing laboratory-wide or national initiatives, research or technical strategies. Extensive experience leading and managing a large organization of technical staff through subordinate managers. Demonstrated experience leading large, complex scientific, engineering or technical research projects or programs. In-depth understanding of relevant business and technical disciplines. In-depth knowledge of emerging technologies, trends, methodologies, and resource management principles. Ability to synthesize and articulate technical and scientific methodologies, specifications, and information. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with others. Demonstrated ability to think strategically and deliver results. Exceptional customer relationship and consensus building skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced and collaborative work environment. Ability to influence and establish effective working relationships in a diverse environment. Motivate and mentor staff. Resolve complex issues quickly and make decisions that meet university objectives in a collaborative culture In addition, preferred requirements include: A Master or PhD degree in STEM field and 10 years of relevant experience similar to those listed above.
